Culinary Specialist – PART-TIME:
The Culinary Specialist at The Big Red Barn Retreat (BRBR) supports the preparation, service, and clean-up of meals for participants and guests. Under the direction of the Chef, this role is responsible for ensuring meals are safely and properly prepared according to established standards and instructions. The Culinary Specialist may work independently during certain shifts, executing assigned menus and maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen and dining areas. This position plays a critical role in the delivery of exceptional hospitality to support BRBR programs, events, and retreats.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in preparing meals according to menus and instructions set by the Chef.
- Follow food safety and sanitation guidelines (including ServSafe standards) at all times.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of all kitchen, prep, dining, and dishwashing areas.
- Monitor food quality for taste, presentation, temperature, and portion control.
- Receive and store food and kitchen supplies properly.
- Set up and break down food service stations, buffets, and dining areas as needed.
- Work independently in the kitchen when the Chef is not present, adhering strictly to assigned recipes, portions, and food safety standards.
- Support farm-to-table food prep and use of garden ingredients when applicable.
- Provide respectful and supportive service to participants, volunteers, and staff.
- Help supervise and coordinate kitchen volunteers as needed.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or food safety concerns to the Chef or Operations Manager.
- Participate in cleanup of the kitchen and dining area following all meals and events.
- Attend staff and training meetings as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned as a regular and sustained performance.
- Strict adherence to the professional, ethical, and compliant work environment as noted in The BRBR Employee Handbook and Non-Disclosure Agreement policies and guidelines.
Experience:
- Experience in food prep and service in a professional or institutional setting.
- Understanding of food safety and hygiene practices.
- Ability to follow recipes, portion standards, and food handling protocols.
- Self-motivated and dependable, especially when working independently.
- Good time management and organizational skills.
- Positive attitude and ability to work respectfully with participants, staff, and volunteers.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: From $14.00 per hour
